Did You Know?

Booker T. & The MGs were the in house backing band for Stax records. The MGs name often comes up at quiz nights and the widely accepted opinion is it stands for Memphis Group. However, Chips Moman a Stax producer claimed the name was taken from an MG sports car he owned. Apparently the motor manufacturer didn’t like the idea and to avoid law suits, Stax confirmed in stood for Memphis Group. Incidentally, The Triumphs were also named after one of his cars.

Whatever the truth of the matter the group ably supported great artists including Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and many others.

Booker T. & The MG’s, the group’s original lineup featured Booker T. Jones on organ, Steve Cropper on guitar, Al Jackson, Jr., on drums, and Lewie Steinberg on bass. Famously, Donald ā€œDuckā€ Dunn replaced Steinberg shortly after the groups formation.
