🇪🇸 Toledo…

Toledo, (pronounced tuh-laid-oh) has a population of 85,000 people and sits 530 metres above sea level. The ancient city is capital of the Castilla-La Mancha region in central Spain. It lies just south of Madrid, and was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1986.

High speed train services operate from most major cities, and the service from Madrid takes just 30 minutes. Book in advance and you can get from Barcelona to Toledo for less than €20. Even if you don’t arrive in Toledo by train, it is well worth visiting the station which is a spectacular piece of Neo-Mudejar architecture.

Toledo Station

The Tagus river runs from east to west around the south of the city and there are some great walking, cycling and nature trails to enjoy on riverside walks. There are numerous municipal and private campsites alongside the river, it is unwise to drive into the city centre because the streets are very narrow.

For a superb place to stay: The Roca Tarpeya 4 Apartment just outside the Jewish quarter and fifteen minutes walk from the historic centre. Expect to pay around €65 per night (off season). Contact the owner direct or via the website…

Remains of Roman Circus

There are many good restaurants in the historic old town. Our favourite is La Clandestina. Mid priced, traditional with a modern twist, the service is great. Eating inside or on the terrace, try the Tiznao (a traditional chargrilled cod dish) followed by the Manchego cheesecake. The wine list includes 20 interesting international wines available by the glass.

Arriving by car, look for junction 47 on the A5 Autoroute and try the The Asador las Esparteras Restaurant. It is a huge refectory style affair, open 24/7 with free easy parking. Website: HERE
