The true story of Barbie-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot. A woman who believed in herself and her ability to create a truly great champagne.
Widowed at 27 years old, she found herself as heir to a vineyard in Reims. In the face of serious fierce opposition from Monsieur Moët, she developed not just the vines but also the important process of removing the sediment from champagne during the manufacturing process.
The film gives a great insight into the life and times of France at the turn of the 18th century and the Napoleonic war. As importantly we see the quiet, confident and intelligent woman who battles the uncertainty of weather conditions and Santé to madame Clicquot.

Toledo, (pronounced tuh-laid-oh) has a population of 85,000 people and sits 530 metres above sea level. The ancient city is capital of the Castilla-La Mancha region in central Spain. It lies just south of Madrid, and was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1986.

High speed train services operate from most major cities, and the service from Madrid takes just 30 minutes. Book in advance and you can get from Barcelona to Toledo for less than €20. Even if you don’t arrive in Toledo by train, it is well worth visiting the station which is a spectacular piece of Neo-Mudejar architecture.

The Tagus river runs from east to west around the south of the city and there are some great walking, cycling and nature trails to enjoy on riverside walks. There are numerous municipal and private campsites alongside the river, it is unwise to drive into the city centre because the streets are very narrow.
For a superb place to stay: The Roca Tarpeya 4 Apartment just outside the Jewish quarter and fifteen minutes walk from the historic centre. Expect to pay around €65 per night (off season). Contact the owner direct or via the website…

There are many good restaurants in the historic old town. Our favourite is La Clandestina. Mid priced, traditional with a modern twist, the service is great. Eating inside or on the terrace, try the Tiznao (a traditional chargrilled cod dish) followed by the Manchego cheesecake. The wine list includes 20 interesting international wines available by the glass.

Arriving by car, look for junction 47 on the A5 Autoroute and try the The Asador las Esparteras Restaurant. It is a huge refectory style affair, open 24/7 with free easy parking. Website: HERE

Beatrice Milhazes is a Brazilian artist who uses geometric shapes and vivid colours to produce stunning abstract art.
She studied art in Rio de Janeiro in the 1980’s and whilst her work has more than a passing nod towards to Mondrian, Matisse and Kandinsky, her style is unique and inspired by movement of nature. Maracorola (below) captures images of sun, waves and flowers and the circles she describes as an organic shape which is spiritual and meditative.

The picture below Midnight, Noon again shows the fascination with nature. The blazing sun and vegetation with vivid colours displayed in linear design.

During her UK tour Beatriz is exhibiting 20 artworks and the exhibition is in St Ives until 29th September 29th 2024.
