No stranger to life in the ghetto, Brenda Holloway has been poor and hungry. Living in the Watts area of Los Angeles, made her industrious and determined. In 1965 she recorded the Smokey Robinson composition When I’m Gone which reached number 25 on the Hot 100 and number 13 on the R&B chart.
Brenda explains the west coast recording… “We created our own sound. It was based on the original Motown sound but recorded not quite so hot. We recorded on four tracks in LA, whereas Detroit recordings wereā3 track”.
