
Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard started the group and quartet was formed with Gloria Williams and Martha Reeves performing under the name, the Del-Phi’s. In 1961 they became a backing group at Motown known as The Vels and famously backed Marvin Gaye on his first hit Stubborn Kind Of Fella. The name Vandellas was derived from a street in Detroit, Van Dyke and Reeves’ favourite singer, Della Reese.
